How to add friends in New World
So far, it doesn't seem like you need to have a person on your Steam friend list to add them as a friend in-game. If you press Esc, you'll see the 'Social' and 'Group' icons to your left. To add a friend, type in their New World name—not their Steam name—and then you can add them as a friend. You can also choose to trade with them, invite them to a group and even duel them if you want, once you've reached Level 10.
This function also works if you want to block, mute or report a player—simply type in their name and you're all set.
How to play with friends in the new world
You can join friends immediately after completing the initial tutorial, although some of your interactions with them won’t be unlocked until later. Press “Escape” to open the menu, and you will see a small icon in the upper left corner. The icon is not marked, but it is a social menu.
Clicking it will open various options, but the search bar is what you need to add friends. You must manually search for friends using their new world name (not their Steam name), and then click their name to send a friend request.
How to make groups
Now that you’ve collected a merry band of bloodthirsty misfits, you’ll no doubt want to take on some of the game’s group activities. From laying siege to another faction, to snatching their outposts, there’s a lot to do in Aeternum.
You won’t want to head in all by yourself, though, so to form a group:
Choose your allies (wisely) on your friend list.
Select “Add to group.”
Alternatively, you can add them in via the “Group” tab in Social.
Your teammate will then be displayed in-game with a blue waypoint.
